Identification and Characterization of Major Caffeoylquinic Acids
and Flavonoids in Artichoke Extracts
A liquid chromatography/diode array detector- mass spectrometry (LC/DAD-EI/MS) was developed to identify and characterize 5-caffeoylquinic acid (chlorogenic acid), 1,3-dicaffeoylquinic acid (cynarin), luteolin-7-O-rutinosid and luteolin-7-O-glycosid of two artichoke extracts. Identifications were performed by comparing the retention time, UV and mass spectra of samples with standards or/and earlier publications. The main marker peaks in the chromatographic fingerprint are the same although two extracts studied are from different manufacturers.
These findings suggest that proposed method is useful for further chromatographic fingerprint of herbal medicine as well as the functional food made from Cynara scolymus L extract.
