Analytical Study on Chemical Constituents of Seed Oils from Pumpkin
by Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)
In this work we investigated the chemical constituents in lipids from seeds of pumpkin (Cucurbita spp.) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Ten pumpkin seed samples were collected to measure total extractable lipids and determine the level of fatty acids in lipophilic extracts. Pumpkin seeds oils were extracted with n-Hexan by using a Sohxlet equipment. The result showed that weight ratios of lipophilic extracts from these seeds ranged from 22.62% to 45.28% (w/w). The constituents of pumkin seed oils were also determined and analyzed. These comprise of some major fatty acids, oleic acid (with the percentage of 3.25-18.36%), linoleic acid (38.68-66.95%); stearic acid (4.87-10.64%) and palmitic acids (12.86-22.06%), respectively.
