Hepatoprotective and Anti-Cirrhosis Effects of Cassia alata L. leaves
Aqueous extract of Cassia alata L. were evaluated for its hepatoprotective effects on acute and chronic hepatitis, anti-chronic inflammatory activity and inhibitory effect on the progression of chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis in vivo.
Oral administration of aqueous extract of Cassia alata (1.290g/kg body weight) reduced significantly by 73.58% the increase in activity of alanine aminotransaminase (ALT) and by 31.22% bilirubin content induced by CCl4 in comparison with that in untreated mice.
Aqueous extract of Cassia alata has also reduced significantly by 12.64% in content of hepatic collagen (P < 0.01) and by 9.30% of MDA content induced by injection of CCl4 for prolonged period in mice.
In addition, Cassia alata aqueous extract exhibited also choleretic effect, increasing by 39.64% the bile flow (P < 0.05) as well as anti-chronic inflammatory activity, reducing by 26.6% the weight of granuloma induced by amianthus in comparison with control group (P < 0.05).
