\n\tSummary
\n\tChemical composition and biological activities of Bitter Tea
\n\tBitter tea (Ilex kaushue S. Y. Hu. syn. Ilex kudingcha C. J. Tseng), (Aquifoliaceae) was first described as a medicine in the name of “Kudingcha” in a supplement to the compendium of Materia Medica in China. \n\tBitter Tea leaf mainly contains triterpenoid saponins (42) and triterpenes (15) (flavonoid (7), essential oil, 33 trace elements, (of them Ca, Mn, Mg, Fe have the highest quantities) etc., of which triterpenoid saponins are its major active components.
\n\tPharmacological studies indicate that Bitter Tea has good effects on the cardiovascular system, It’s effective in lowering blood pressure of cardio-cerebral vessels, reducing blood pressure and blood lipid, lowering blood cholesterol and blood glucose, anti-inflammation, detoxificating, anti-hepatitis and inhibiting cirrhosis in active chronic hepatitis etc....
\n\tBitter tea has no effect on reproduction of mice. Bitter Tea has low acute toxicity (it’s impossible to determine LD50 of water extract and total saponin). Semi-long-term toxicity test indicated that water extract and total saponins have no effect on the hepatic and renal functions and haematological indice as well as no injury to structure of these organs of rabbit.
