Effect of Euphorbia thymifolia Linn Extract on Blood

Glucose Level in MSG- and STZ/NAD-Induced Diabetes Mice

The search for traditional medicine in curing diabetes has been of interest to many scientists. Euphorbia thymifolia Linn. is small prostrate herbaceous annual weed in Vietnam. The effect of ethanolic extract of Euphorbia thymifolia Linn. on blood glucose level was investigated in MSG- and STZ/NAD-induced diabetes mice. The acute toxicity and phytochemical analysis of the extract were also evaluated. The results showed that the extract (800 mg/kg body weight) significantly reduced blood glucose level up to 43.8 % and 48 % in 12 hours fasting MSG- and STZ/NAD- induced diabetes mice, respectively, after 4h of administration. The findings indicate that ethanolic extract of Euphorbia thymifolia Linn has ability to reduce blood glucose level and could be used as medication for diabetes.
