\n\tStudy on Antioxidant Activity of the Medicinal Plant

\n\tTetracera scandens (L.) Merr.

\n

\n\tThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity in vitro and in vivo of extract, fractions, and constituents of the medicinal plant Tetracera scandens (L.) Merr. A preliminary screening result showed that the MeOH extract of this plant exhibited strong free radical scavenging and anti-lipid peroxidation activities. Further study confirmed that the MeOH extract, EtOAc and BuOH fractions exhibited strong free radical scavenging activity against DPPH (IC50 values of 11.87, 9.29, 17.10 mg/ml, respectively), anti-lipid peroxidation (IC50 37.90, 32.39, 99.07mg/ml, respectively), as well as inhibitory effect on xanthine oxidase (IC50 21.39, 9.38, 28.23, respectively). Of the constituents isolated from the plant, quercetin (1) showed the highest antioxidant activity, while quercitrin (2) and afzelin (3) were less active. In addition, these extract, fractions, and quercetin also strongly inhibited the formation of MDA in liver of mice induced by CCl4. The results provide evidence to explain the uses of T. scandens for the treatment of rheumatism and pain in Vietnamese ethnomedicine.
