Summary
Nutritional Value and Pharmacological Activities of Microalgal Spirulina: A Review
Spirulina has long been used as a common dietary substance around the world from ancient times. In recent years, several lines of studies have provided insight into nutritive and health beneficial effects of Spirulina. It is well known with unusual high protein content and richness in vitamins, minerals, and bioactive components. Especially, Spirulina has been determined to possess various biological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-cancer, anti-obesity, anti-diabetes, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and hepatoprotective activities. Therefore, this review presents a brief overview of nutritional values as well as pharmaceutical properties of Spirulina with emphasis on its promising application in pharmaceuticals.
