Summary

Screening for Anti-lipase Activity of Medicinal Plant Extracts

Obesity is a global health problem because it is considered to be a risk factor associated with the genesis or development of various diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to develop effective prevention and treatment strategies for obesity. Inhibition of pancreatic lipase is an attractive targeted approach for the discovery of potent anti-obesity agents for obesity treatment. In this study, we screened crude extracts from 18 plants to test their in vitro anti-obesity activity using porcine pancreatic lipase assay. Among the 18 plants examined, nine extracts from plants showed high anti-lipase activity using p-nitrophenyl butyrate as a substrate in porcine pancreatic lipase assay. Furthermore, four plant extracts were determined IC50 values, including Asarum maximum Hemsl, Ganoderma sp1, Scurrula parasitica L., and Nymphaea rubra Roxb. ex Salisb. Further study should be carried out to elucidate the anti-obesity and mechanism of these candidates.
