Summary

Study on Antibacterial and Anti-inflammatory Activities of Ethanol Extracts from Moringa oleifera Seeds

Moringa oleifera seeds were extracted with 3 descending concentrations of ethanol (96%, 70%, and 45%) using percolation or heat shaking methods. In vitro study revealed that the antibacterial activity of Moringa oleifera seeds extract by percolation method (MP extract) was more typical than that by heat shaking (MS extract). The MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) values of MP extract were 0.781 mg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus and 0.195 mg/ml against Vibrio cholera. Anti-inflammatory research based on carrageenan-induced mouse paw edema indicated that MP extract expressed more significant anti-inflammatory effect and myeloperoxidase inhibitory activity than MS extract. These effects of MP extract were similarly as reference drug prednisone at the dose of 5 mg/kg.
