Cytotoxic Properties of Brucea mollis Leaves
The methanol extract of the leaves of Brucea mollis Wall. ex Kurz was found to significantly inhibit the growth of HepG2 (human liver carcinoma cells) with IC50 value of 14.49 µg/ml. This methanol extract was fractionated in various solvents (n-hexane, chloroform and water). Of those, the hexane fraction of Brucea mollis showed high cytotoxic activity in vitro against LU (human lung carcinoma cells), HepG2 (human liver carcinoma cells) and MCF7 (human breast adenocarcinoma cells) with IC50 values of 3.5 µg/ml, 1.03 µg/ml and 5.8 µg/ml, respectively. Two fractions A5 and A8 of the above hexane fraction were powerfully active against HepG2 cancer cells with IC50 values of 0.1 µg/ml and 1.0 µg/ml, respectively.
