\n\tFrom the methanol extract of whole plant of Hypericum japonicum Thunb., three phenolic compounds protocatechuic acid (1), hyperoside (2) and neolancerin (3) were isolated by combination of various chromatographic methods. Their structures were identified by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. Compounds 1 and 2 showed considerable scavenging effects on a free radical DPPH with IC50 values of 7.2 and 26.7μg/ml, respectively. This is the first report on the existence of compounds 1-3 from the Hypericum japonicum Thunb.
