Summary

Screening Vietnamese Medicinal Plants for Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitory Activity

Among 241 MeOH extracts, prepared from 238 plants, 184 extracts demonstrated xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity at 100 µg/ml.Of those, 66 extracts showed an inhibition rate greater than 50%. At 50 µg/ml, 128 extracts were active with 32 showed inhibition of XO more than 50%. At 10 µg/ml, 57 extracts were active with 5 possessing more than 50% inhibition. In total, 66 extracts showed IC₅₀ values below 100 µg/ml. The crude extracts possessing XO inhibitory activity with IC₅₀ values less than 10 µg/ml were extracts of Smilax corbularia Kunth (IC₅₀ 8.57 µg/ml), Dichroa febrifuga  Lour. (IC₅₀ 8.58 µg/ml) and Miliusa balansae Fin.Gagnep. (IC₅₀ 9.40 µg/ml).
